Learning To Trust the Process of Life, Lessons from my Backyard

Trusting the beautiful process of life has been something I’ve reflected on a lot over the past week (as evidenced by my last two posts on Instagram). Right outside my office window is a nectarine tree that is currently flowering. The vibrant pink flowers are opening and the bees are doing their work to pollinate. Nature is always such a grounding reminder of the process of life, and how I have no part in most of it.

Lost in the Weeds

Of course, there are commitments and obligations I choose to show up for, but outside of that, life unfolds around me. There are so many systems and processes that are so much bigger than me. And yet, I often get lost in the weeds of these processes thinking I have to exert control. To make it all happen. And as a result, I suffer.

Much of this control and suffering comes from my resistance to life, my resistance to my own discomfort. For example, in looking at these beautiful pink flowers that are already falling from the tree having completed their purpose, I found myself thinking, “I’ll be sad when they are gone. I wish they stayed for longer.”

Recognizing the Beauty

Classic setup for suffering! Instead of being present with the beauty that’s here now, I worry about it ending. Embedded in this worry is a lack of trust for the process. And a forgetting that each stage has it's own beauty. Already the leaves on the tree are growing in and soon the little nectarines will begin to grow ultimately providing a wonderful summer treat to enjoy. The leaves shed for fall and the process starts all over again.

For me, trusting the process is about knowing that each moment, phase, or season of life has its place. What's here now won't be forever which is a good reason to enjoy what I can and not get lost in the wishing of tomorrow. Without the flowering, I can't fruit. Without the shedding, I can't start again.
